As much as introverts dread dealing with people, most still need some human connection. After all, they’re introverts, not hermits. But it’s hard work: exchanging pleasantries on the phone, producing facial expressions in response to something someone just said—it’s exhausting—even when they’re truly engaged and enjoying themselves.
The world of social networking sites allows introverts to maintain that human connection without much of the drain. Now, instead of producing laughter, you can simply type “LOL.” Instead of calling to wish someone happy birthday and having an obligatory 15-30 minute phone conversation, you can write “Happy Birthday!!!!!” on the person’s wall or comments section. It only takes a sec, and the birthday girl/boy will never know whether the number of exclamation points you added is a true measure of your excitement.
The sites also come with many little nudges to be sociable. As soon as you “friend” someone on a social networking site, you’re linked to their profile details and provided with helpful reminders:
Stated: It’s Ethel’s birthday
Implied: Maybe you should wish her a happy birthday.
Stated: Herman added new photos
Implied: Maybe you should look at them and add fun comments.
Human relationships are now quick and easy.
